Artes de la Rosa Finds Its

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

Artes de la Rosa is proud to announce principle casting for the REGIONAL PREMIERE of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown receiving its first North Texas staging this July. The musical comedy features a book by Jeffrey Lane, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and is adapted from the Academy Award Nominated cult film of the same name by Pedro Almadovar. The cast of 18 features 5 Artes de la Rosa debuts at the historic Rose Marine Theater. This regional premiere will utilize the full West End production orchestration.

Set in late 80’s Madrid, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown tells the story of the intertwining lives of a group of women whose relationships with men lead to a tumultuous 48 hours of love, confusion, and passion. Originally based by Almodóvar on Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice, the show follows Pepa, Candela and Lucia struggling for power over their own lives. The production is adapted from the Spanish Pedro Almodovar film which will receive a screening at The Rose Marine Theater on June 18th at 7:30 pm.

Leading the cast is Artes de la Rosa veteran Alden Bowers Price in the role of Pepa, a woman whose life has been turned upside down by a man. You may remember Alden from her moving and powerful performance as The Baker’s Wife in Artes de la Rosa’s critically acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. Playing the role of Lucia, originated on Broadway by Patti Lupone, is Kristin Spires, last seen on the Rose Marine stage in Twelfth Night: A Musical Comedy Carnival. Rounding out the female principle cast are Rachael Blizzard as Paulina and Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company members Emma Leigh Montes and Elizabeth Thresher as distractible model Candela and no-nonsense Marissa, both seen in Welcome to Arroyo’s. James Worley and Jordan Justice play father and son Yvan and Carlos respectively with former Louis Zapata Resident Company member Jason Solis acting as the narrating Taxi Cab Driver. The Women on the Verge ensemble will include Trey Cardona, Loagan Vince Hudson, Haven Isom, Mindamora Rocha, Suzann Schultz, Bo Sickling, Celeste Spangler, Kyle R. Trentham, Fidencio Vazquez, and Samantha Whitbeck.

The production is directed by Artes de la Rosa Artistic Director Adam Adolfo who is also serving as Costume Designer. Frequent collaborator and Column Award winner Kristin Spires serves as Music Director with Welcome to Arroyo’s dancer Nathan Scott as Choreographer. Bradley Gray who designed Artes de la Rosa’s Twelfth Night, Welcome to Arroyo’s, and Man of La Mancha serves as Scenic Designer with Big Fish: 12 Chairs Lighting Design is by Kyle Harris with Sound Design by Mark Howard. Production begins July 22 with a single preview and opening night July 23 at the Rose Marine Theater in Fort Worth for a strictly limited 3 week engagement.

ABOUT WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN

Both touching and hilarious, Women On The Verge is a story about women and the men who pursue them... finding them, losing them, needing them, and rejecting them. At the center is Pepa whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980s Madrid. Along with Pepa, there's her missing (possibly philandering) lover, Ivan; his ex-wife of questionable sanity, Lucia; their son Carlos; Pepa's friend, Candela, and her terrorist boyfriend; a power-suited lawyer, and a taxi driver who dispenses tissues, mints and advice in equal proportion. Mayhem and comic madness abound, balanced by the empathy and heart that are trademarks of Almodóvar's work.
