ABOUT WELCOME TO ARROYO’S
"A sweet, loose-limbed shout out to Manhattan's Lower East Side…With a Greek chorus of DJs who 'mix' the play right in front of us, WELCOME shows that hip-hop can still goose mainstream theater instead of merely filling the diversity slot…The show's exuberant vibe becomes so infectious, it's easy to forget this is a story about two siblings recovering from the recent death of their only parent…In WELCOME TO ARROYO'S the playwright creates a space for all audiences, young or old, of any color, to kick back and play." —LA Times. "Sometimes you can believe the hype…the play blends streetwise exuberance with deep melancholy undercurrents." —Time Out NY. "A personal, charming, clever play with a hip-hop bent…this work demonstrates a genuinely honest voice, an energetic, playful theatricality…solid storytelling rooted in character. [Diaz is] an extremely welcome voice in American theater." —Variety. "A geeky brilliance and an unexpected wave of rousing feminism lives at the heart of WELCOME TO ARROYO'S…an urban comedy that dares to place women at the birth of modern-day hip-hop." —NewcityStage.com.

THE STORY
Alejandro Arroyo owns the newest (and cleanest) lounge in New York City's Lower East Side. His sister, Molly, has a nasty habit of writing graffiti on the back wall of the local police precinct. Two DJs and a crew of hip hop dancers serve as Greek chorus spin the story in this hip-hop theater coming-of-age story.

ABOUT THE LOUIS ZAPATA RESIDENT ACTING COMPANY
The Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company is an essential component of the artistry and uniqueness of Artes de la Rosa’s seasons. The ensemble enhances the work of the company through its ability to develop complex and ambitious productions over time; plan seasons to utilize the unique strengths of an ensemble of actors; and undertake large cast productions on a regular basis, consistently achieving inspired performances in both large and small roles. In many ways, Louis Zapata is the father of The Rose Marine Theater, the home and creative heart of Fort Worth’s Northside community. Mr. Zapata was the first Latino elected to City Council and helped spearhead the renovation of the Historic Rose Marine Theater. His fierce commitment to the Rose Marine Theater continued till the end of his life where he made a friend promise that “nothing would happen to the theater.” Mr. Zapata passed away shortly following that promise and to honor his many contributions Artistic Director Adam Adolfo named the Resident Acting Company in his honor.

ABOUT THE ACTORS
Domanick Hubbard is so excited to be a part of this year’s Louis Zapata resident company. Domanick Hubbard started his performer career at the age of 15, where he played Zeke in High School Musical. That's where he fell in love for the stage and performing. From there he went on to be in more productions, some of his favorite roles he has played have been: (Angel) Rent!, (Genie) Aladdin, and (Mungojerrie and Skimbkeshanks) CATS! All were performed at North Central Texas College. After all that excitement Domanick went to college at Southeastern Oklahoma State University were he got his BA in Musical Theatre with a minor in dance. While in college Domanick had the opprotuinty of working with the Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival for 3 summers. He served as a performer, was also a instructor for the teen and children's Theatre. His favorite roles performed in college were: (Tobias Ragg) Sweeney Todd, (Buddy) The Diviners, and (Billy Flynn) Chicago! Since graduation Domanick has performed at Six Flags Over Texas for the past 2 years singing and dancing for his life. When he is not performing he is working as a choreographer, working with kids and inspiring the youth to do what they love.  He is very excited to be getting back into the Theatre world and looks forward to what this Company has in store for him.

Matthew Perry Smith is thrilled to be starting his career in Texas as a member of the Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company!  Matthew is a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Theater and Political Science.  Some of his favorite roles while at IUP include Doug in Gruesome Playground Injuries, Noel in The Optimist, and Beatty in Fahrenheit 451.  Matthew also spent a summer performing with Keystone Repertory Theater, appearing as Mike Ferris in Hands on a Hardbody and Jim O’Conner in The Glass Menagerie.  After graduation Matthew spent the summer performing at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire as Bartold Von Holtz.  Besides acting, Matthew has extensive training in stage combat, holding the rank of Advanced Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors, as well as being an Apprentice Instructor with Dueling Arts International.  Matthew has also choreographed fights for several productions, including Oleanna, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sweeney Todd, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Moon Over Buffalo, and Soldier’s Heart.  One of the highlights of Matthew’s journey in stage combat was accompanying his teacher to China in 2014 to assist teaching a four day unarmed stage combat workshop for students at the Nanjing University of the Arts.  Outside of theater, Matthew enjoys stand-up comedy, slam poetry, and being a huge nerd, particularly when it comes to Captain America.  Matthew would like to thank his friends and family for all of their support, without which it wouldn’t be possible to pursue his dream.

Elizabeth Thresher: It was the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty six when maw and paw got that brown chicken brown cow feeling. The following year, the earth welcomed Elizabeth Thresher into its orbit and stationed her in Dallas, TX. A few soccer games here, a few rounds of competitive theatre there and couple bowls of pretzels later, Elizabeth found herself at the University of North Texas where she chose to work socially among the publics. Once she secured a social work degree, she traversed to Cincinnati to work with AmeriCorps and then to Chicago to see where music could take her. As fate would have it, her journey to the Windy City took her to Wrigley Field where she sang the National Anthem and led her to her life-long teammate, Steve. They have been making music and magic together ever since; Steve is an audio engineer, producer, vocalist and all-around stellar feller. After joining forces and enduring multiple Chicago winters, Steve and Elizabeth opted to move (back) to the warmer Dallas climate.  Being back home gave Elizabeth the confidence to take her acting talents from in front of the bathroom mirror to a real stage.  She has appeared in Young Frankenstein at the Grand Prairie Arts Council, Footloose at Art Centre Theatre Plano and now the Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company at Artes de la Rosa. Elizabeth appreciates all of the support and inspiration she has received from her family and friends and hopes to pay it forward continually.

Emily Warwick is a Fort Worth native, but she currently lives in Granbury, TX. She works with the Granbury Theatre Company as the resident Costume Designer and Properties Master. Emily appreciates being able to work on the technical side, but her real passion for the theatre is performing. Her passion started early but it took off full force when she was 12 years old and she has been on a stage ever since. She has performed with the Casa Manana Apprentice Program in Secret Garden (Ayah). Some of her favorite past shows include Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown), Seussical (Mrs. Mayor), Little Shop of Horrors (Chiffon), Bye Bye Birdie (Doris MacAfee) at Plaza Theatre in Cleburne, TX, Spamalot (Lady of the Lake), Sweeney Todd (Mrs. Lovett), Legally Blonde (Paulette Bonafonte), Ghost: The Musical (Oda Mae Brown), Lucky Stiff (Rita LaPorta), Fiddler on the Roof (Golde), Mary Poppins (Mrs. Brill) with Granbury Theatre Company, Peter Pan, Children of Eden, and Beehive: The 60's Musical with Theatreworks Community Players in Martinsville, VA. Emily is looking forward to this next chapter with the Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company, Adam Adolfo and Artes De La Rosa. She is blessed with family and friends behind her every step of the journey. "Do it with passion, or not at all."

Emma Leigh Montes is a local actor in the DFW area. She is excited to be making her debut on the Artes de la Rosa stage in this upcoming season and is even more excited to be a member in the Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company. Emma was most recently seen in Nevermore! Edgar Allan Poe The Final Mystery at Runway Theatre, where she played the Voice of the Raven. Before that, she was seen as Shelley Parker in Bat Boy at OhLook Performing Arts Center. At OhLook, she was also given the opportunity to be a part of Evil Dead the Musical and the world premiere of the musical Dula. Some of her favorite past credits include  Endgame (Nell), Henry V (Nym/Bates) , A Christmas Carol (Belle/Laundress) ,  A Mile Away From Paradise (Sarah), Magnolia Day (Lisa) , Extracurricular (Julia), Jinxed (Jessica "Meatloaf") , and The Closet (Twinkles) . She would like to thank Adam for always encouraging her and pushing her to achieve more than she thought she could. Emma is also extremely blessed to have the most rockin' group of people behind her. She would like to thank her best friend, Kolby for his love and encouragement, her awesome boyfriend, Jordan, for his constant support in everything she does, her Papa Bill and Grandma Lucy for all of their love, encouragement and support and most importantly her parents, who's amazing advice, love, encouragement and constant support is what helps her keep moving forward. 2016 Crazy Love Season

Artes de la Rosa Announces the 2016 Crazy Love Season

In its ongoing mission to bring Latin art & culture to the North Texas Community,
Artes de la Rosa is proud to bring you a season of storytelling that embraces the simple idea that love makes your crazy! Whether it be the love you have for your parents, your brothers & sisters, or that special someone who makes you weak in the knees, there is a single universal truth…Love makes you do crazy things.

Artes de la Rosa Artistic Director Adam Adolfo has aptly named his season of theatre, film, and events “Crazy Love” announcing the season formally Monday October 26.The season, comprised of 4 theatre productions (2 regional premiers), 5 films, 2 community festivals, and a holiday concert,

Adam Adolfo will be celebrating his 6th anniversary with the Latino organization and is eager to reinvent himself with this season. “Artes de la Rosa continues to produce powerful and conceptual theatre with performance celebrating new ways of looking at classic themes. That’s been our motivation for years and this season still maintains that artistic vision but is attempting to reflect on more dynamic character driven stories,” says Adolfo.

“Big Fish”, the first show of theatre season, “is a great example of that” offers the Artistic Director. “We’re excited to be working on a new script by the original Broadway team that focuses more squarely on the character dynamics of father and son. This version of the show has a new song and also a reinstated number that was cut right before the Broadway opening.” Joining Adolfo on the production is long time musical collaborator Kristin Spires who will music direct the production. Choreography will be by Austin Ray Beck who provided choreography for Adolfo’s Cuban Romeo & Juliet and the family favorite, Dora The Explorer Live.

With hip hop making such powerful waves currently in the theatre community across the country, Adolfo will stage 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist Kristoffer Diaz’s early work, Welcome to Arroyo’s. In it a Greek chorus of two hip hop DJs spin the tale of a brother and sister’s search for their respective places in the world after the death of their mother.  Alejandro is desperate to make Arroyo’s the hottest lounge in New York to honor the memory of his mother, while Molly’s desire to make her “mark” as a talented graffiti artist is at odds with her new infatuation with a rookie cop.  Their struggle to move forward is made even more uncertain as they discover what might be a secret about their mother that could change the very foundation of their lives and, possibly, the history of hip hop music.

Artes de la Rosa will follow up with the regional premiere of Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, a musical based on Pedro Almodóvar's classic film. With music and lyrics by David Yazbek, best known for his Dirty Rotten Scoundrells adaptation, the production features a book by Jeffrey Lane. The pair have taken Almodóvar's tale and infused it with their own wry, comic style and an irresistible Spanish beat. Both touching and hilarious, it's a story about women and the men who pursue them... finding them, losing them, needing them, and rejecting them. At the center is Pepa, whose friends and lovers are blazing a trail through 1980s Madrid.

Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues will close out the 2016 season. After a Sold-Out Run in 2011, this epic work of feminine strength returns to the Rose Marine Theatre with a new bilingual English/Spanish staging. This Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a six-year-old girl, a septuagenarian New Yorker, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaughter, and a feminist happy to have found a man who "liked to look at it."

The 2016 Season will again feature The Louis Zapata Resident Acting Company. Named for former City Councilman Louis Zapata who was instrumental in securing funds to bring the Rose Marine Theater back to its former glory, The Resident Acting Company will be featured in performances throughout the year.

Artes de la Rosa’s 2016 season will be presented at the historic Rose Marine Theater, 1440 North Main Street in Fort Worth. For more information on the season or to purchase a 2016 season membership please visit www.ArtesDeLaRosa.org

Or Why Doing an Adam Adolfo Show

is Like Going to War

By Adam Adolfo

Much has been said about the powerful dogtag image being used to market the Artes de la Rosa production of Man of La Mancha. It is simultaneously iconic, edgy, and elegant. It also is part of a greater story that only actors, designers, and musicians who have worked with me before know.

Ask any actor who’s done one of my shows what it’s like and they won’t flinch as they respond proudly, WAR. What began as a bit of a joke has transitioned into something that is both inspirational and a source of pride for theatre artists.

In the Heights actress and Tony Award winner, Karen Olivo, famously called the process of rehearsal and performance, “Battle”. She says, “My desire to share my experience, my heart, and my pain became a need. Every evening I would call our show 'going into battle'. My cast-mates would laugh or sometimes agree depending on their level of fatigue or illness. However, I meant it. I was at war with myself.”

The phrase actors in my shows use is, “Doing an Adam Adolfo show is like going to war…” it even spawned an unofficial rehearsal hashtag (#war). One snarky actor went further by saying “…specifically the Vietnam war, because it’s all conflict, there’s no resolution, but you know without a doubt something important has happened.” The metaphor for the rehearsal process is oddly appropriate. Tensions are high, and demands are higher. There is a constant struggle to achieve better and produce stronger, and yet the drive behind it continues. While it is not life and death like a solider, the commitment and pride it can elicit are quite similar.

A moment from
Stolen Shakespeare Guild's HENRY V
Several years ago, I directed a production of Shakespeare’s HENRY V for Fort Worth’s Stolen Shakespeare Guild, which I set in a fictional world that combined imagery from World War II with Elizabethan costuming.  The effect was a fairly elegant image of war.  On opening night, I gave the cast a ‘Good Show Gift’, they were dog tags. On the tag was the name of the show, and a line from the script, “How sweet a thing it is to wear a crown.” To say they liked it was an understatement, they flipped out and asked if they could wear them under their costumes… and thus a tradition was born.

Everyone who works on an Adam Adolfo show must earn their dog tag and they receive their tags on opening night.  It has become something that actors who have been through multiple ‘wars’ look forward to, this opening night tradition that signifies accomplishment.

Adrian Godinez, member of Artes de la Rosa’s Resident Acting Company, and currently scarring audiences as The Captain of the Inquisition in Man of La Mancha says, “The dog tags bring back the memories of the show. Dog tags must be earned after weeks of work and dedication.” Adrian is now on his 5th or 6th tag. Faith Hope who received her first dogtag with Man of La Mancha offers, “When you join the military you know full well you are setting yourself up for exhaustion and pain. You know in the end there will always be two camps the ones who love and the ones who oppress but you do it anyway because of the Love you have for this great country. It is no different in an Adam Adolfo show. You WILL suffer, you will suffer tears and pain and sometimes even blood but in the end it's worth it all for the craft we love so dear! We won't always agree with the road taken to the final product but all roads lead to a group of virtual strangers united under the same flag of joy and passion for this art.

Artes de la Rosa tours Latin American Countries with 2015 Season dedicated to the Rhythm of Latin America

Artes de la Rosa
Cultivates the 2015 Season of Cultural Events With
RITMO: Rhythm of the People

In its ongoing mission to bring Latin art & culture to the North Texas Community, Artes de la Rosa’s Artistic Director Adam Adolfo has designed a season to bring to the Rose Marine Theater for the 2015 calendar a season programs that he calls “RITMO: Rhythm of the People.”

When you stop to consider Latin people on the whole, we are an extremely musical and vibrant community. If you’ve ever talked to a “Spanish Mom” you know we don’t just talk with our voices, we sing! Simple conversation turns into dueling arias, not only with words but our hands, and certainly our hearts. The common denominator amongst the diverse Latin cultures of the world is music!

Twelfth Night is Shakespeare’s most musical play and I’m anxious to provide it the excitement of the Samba beat,” says Adam Adolfo. Inspired by Baz Lurhman’s film Moulin Rouge and the musical episode of tv’s Grey’s Anatomy, Adolfo notes that he’s venturing into new territory. “It’s exciting to do something new and different. As theatre makers, if we are not ambitiously trying to break new ground, we might as well just give up.” New and different is certainly the Artistic Directors style and he’s promising that with creative reimagining of Man of La Mancha. “I’m not ready to let the cat out of the bag yet on that show, but I will say that I was inspired by Dallas Theatre Center’s production of Les Miserables. It was daring, provocative, and inspiring… it inspired me to look for another musical that should be seen with fresh eyes. So I dug deep into Man of La Mancha’s book and found a new way to look at the material that excites me to no end. It will definitely be like no production you’ve seen before.”

MAN OF LA MANCHA
The Musical
May 15th – 31st

Written by Dale Wasserman
Music by Mitch Leigh & Lyrics by Joe Darion

Directed by Adam Adolfo
Musical Director: Kristin Spires
Choreographer: Maegan Marie Stewart

A thrilling new production of one of the best loved musicals, Man of La Mancha vividly imagines Don Quixote through the life of the great Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes. The musical moves seamlessly between realities and Cervantes’s own outsized imagination, where his noble idealism finds expression in his great literary creation, Don Quixote.  With a heartfelt score that includes the worldwide hit “The Impossible Dream” – Man of La Mancha is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. His dream is Everyman’s dream. His tilting at windmills is Everyman’s great adventure. Somehow, the footlights disappear, time is telescoped and the Man of La Mancha speaks for humankind remaining with your soul well after the shows final bow. Dare to dream the impossible!
